BookTalk is a monthly author series hosted by Union Hotel in Toronto, celebrating Canadian literature through intimate conversations with the country’s most celebrated writers. In partnership with the Giller Prize, each event offers a rare opportunity to connect with award-winning authors and fellow book lovers in an inspiring downtown setting.

A Look Back: June & July Highlights

In June, we were honoured to welcome André Alexis, Giller Prize–winning author of Fifteen Dogs and Days by Moonlight, for an intimate evening of storytelling and discussion. Alexis spoke about the art of writing, the surreal nature of fame in literature, and the role of mythology in his work. The night was both reflective and playful — just like his writing.

Then in July, we had the privilege of hosting Thomas King, one of Canada’s most acclaimed and beloved voices in literature. King captivated the audience with his sharp wit and signature humour while discussing his novel Deep House and the importance of storytelling as a form of resistance and healing.

Both events drew literature lovers, writers, and creatives alike — a diverse group united by a shared love of books and the vibrant literary scene in Toronto.

What’s Next: August 21 with Souvankham Thammavongsa

This month, we’re thrilled to welcome Souvankham Thammavongsa, author of the Giller Prize–winning short story collection How to Pronounce Knife. Known for her spare, poetic prose and emotionally resonant storytelling, Thammavongsa will join us on August 21 for what promises to be an unforgettable evening of readings and conversation.
